Revamping Kinshasa's School Infrastructure

The African Salvation Group continues our dedication to supporting the education of vulnerable children in the DR Congo. ASG instigated a survey of the state of the primary schools infrastructure in the district of Tshangu of the Masina/Kinsangani neighborhoods of Kinshasa, two of the most impoverished areas. Our investigators found almost 90% of schools were in very deplorable states.

Our team found classrooms with no roofs or with dilapidated roofs. In many instances schools were partially furnished, lacking in both desks and chairs. There were classrooms where students could only sit on the bare, unpaved ground and some fortunates using broken desks. More saddening is that the majority of schools lacked sanitary installations and running water.

Children should not grow up this way. Although our resources are slight, the African Salvation Group is determined to devise means to provide the children of the DR Congo with safe, clean and healthy learning environments.

ASG volunteers have gone out to rally the communities. We are engaging parents, teachers, the school authority, local residents and merchants. Our initial meetings with the parents’ associations of these schools were very positive. The parents and school representatives were pleased with the initiative ASG taking. They are supportive and ready to lend their time, labor, and energy in helping with the renovation work.

The African Salvation Group is hereby asking for the material and financial support that can contribute to improving the conditions in which these children may strive to become better educated and responsible citizens. We will also be raising funds locally so the communities will have a stake in their schools. We will help them organize the revamping of their schools, one by one, classroom by classroom. We will help them make a difference to their children's future one step at a time.
